There may be complications during angioplasty procedures, leading to cardio-pulmonary arrest (or imminent death) while the patient is in recovery. Here, the patient is placed immediately (within 10 minutes) on a percutaneous bypass support machine. This support system takes over the function of the heart and lungs and allows the physician to correct the underlying complications of the patient in a safe manner.
